Obituary of Stephen Howard Sampson

Stephen H. Sampson, 71, of Evans passed away at his home on April 8, 2023.  He was born March 7, 1952 in New York, New York to Howard and Evadne (Barriteau) Sampson. 

He grew up as an Army brat, as his father was serving around the world, moving to Germany at one point and then back to New York where he graduated from high school.  He received his bachelor’s from Cornell.

He worked for Parks and Rec in upstate New York and then in Colorado.   He met Catherine Ann Martin while they were both working at a group home in Larkspur where he ran a horse program.  In 1989, they married in Green Mountain Falls, Colorado.  They fostered a number of children over the years, later adopting three.  He became a stay-home dad to raise their children while Cathy continued to teach. 

Stephen operated a horse therapy program, Toby’s Dream, for emotionally disturbed and traumatized children and adults and was a member of NARHA.  He also enjoyed photography and attended St. Mary and Our Lady of Peace Catholic Churches. 

Survivors include his wife, Cathy, three children; Robert (Bethany Klassy) Sampson, Simon (Emily Kailey) Sampson and Suzanna Sampson, five grandchildren; Izayah, Izabelle, Alijah, Arijah and Armoni as well as a sister, Toni Johnson. 

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Rene Sampson.
